The blue economy and sustainable development of coastal resort areas: potential and challenges
This presentation examines the blue economy concept as a strategic framework for sustainable development of Ukraine's Black Sea coastal resort areas. The research analyzes six key resort destinations (Koblevo, Serhiivka, Karolino-Buhaz, Rybakivka, Kinburn Spit, and Kuyalnik) and their unique water resources including the sea, estuaries, and therapeutic mud deposits.
The study identifies environmental challenges across nine tourism types: mass beach tourism, private/cottage tourism, medical/health tourism, ecotourism, water sports, event tourism, religious tourism, fishing tourism, and gastronomic tourism. Each sector's negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems are documented, including sewage discharge, coastal erosion, plastic pollution, and habitat destruction.
The presentation aligns proposed solutions with UN Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water), 13 (Climate Action), and 14 (Marine Ecosystems), offering seven strategic recommendations: regional blue economy strategies, modern treatment facilities, water monitoring systems, coastal development regulation, post-conflict rehabilitation, educational campaigns, and public-private partnerships.
